Srutilaya Centre for Indian Music, Sweden presenterar

Madan Mohan Nagendran - fiol
Hariharan - Sundarraman - mridangam

Shantala Subramanyam – Flute and vocal

Shantala, born in Bangalore – India, was immersed in music right from her birth having born into an illustrious music family.  She was initiated into formal training in Carnatic [South Indian] Classical vocal music at a tender age of 4 and she took to flute playing when she was about 11 years old. It was her good fortune to be trained by eminent performers -vocalist Late Sri. Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan and is currently pursuing vocal music training under Sri O.S.Thyagarajan and Sri Sriram Parasuram. She gratefully acknowledges the contributions of famed South Indian drummers Trichur Sri.Narendran, Patri. Satish Kumar and Parupalli Phalgun towards enriching her rhythm training. Her brother Shashank and father Subramanyam nurtured her talent carefully assuming the role of a teacher.

At this time in India where women flutists are only a hand few, Shantala has been a prominent contributor to this field owing to her diligent and hard training. This view has been echoed by music critiques. She has been highly appreciated for her melodic presentations combined with complex rhythmic patterns.

She has released a double album CD titled “Bamboo in Harmony”, “Singing Bamboo” and “Dakshin” which has been highly appreciated by critiques and audiences alike. In this CD she has collaborated with some of the most sought after artists from South India.
